The N6a PRR caboose came about due to a law in Ohio that all cabooses had to have a steel-underframe. So from around 1913 to 1923 old fore wheel all wood cars got re-made into eight wheel steel framed N6a cars. The rebuilding also added ten feet to the car body. Most had off-center cupolas but not all, some also hade small windose near the roof at each emd.All made in Altoona shops. By 1940 most N6a are out of mainline freight and in local or work train.
This is the more commen off center type.
