CN 9000 was North America's first diesel road locomotive. Built in 1928 as two 2-D-1's with the same road number and connected by a drawbar, this did not happen, they did run as a pare for about two years then separated and one renumber as 9001. In WWII 9001 was put in standby and 9000 was armored, the only armoed train in WWII and N.A., 9000 was then rebuilt after the war and scrapped in around 1950.
Baldwin did the design, Westinghouse electrical equipment, Commonwealth the cast frame, and from Scotland a 1,330hp V-12 Beardmore diesel.
High maintenance was a problum due to hamd made parts. Only two Beardmore diesel ever imported.
