This Midwest Central GP38-2 was reskinned by Majekear from the great model by Justin Cornell (norfolksouthern37). Many thanks to Justin for his kind permission for the reskin. The loco is compatible with TS10, TS12 and T:ANE. Thanks to the following for additional features: kgp for the Nathan K5LA4 hornsound, norfolksouthern37 for the bogeys, engine sounds and effects library. Thanks also to wulf_9 for the ARN library, enabling automatically assigned running numbers from 9801 to 9899.

Locomotive information:

In the mid 1960's as road switcher locomotives became more and more powerful, it was also apparent there was a demand for medium powered units among many of North America's railroads and industries. In 1966, Electro Motive Division of General Motors released a locomotive designed specifically for this market, the 2000hp GP38, powered by a new, 16-cylinder, 645 cubic-inch prime mover. It sold well and 706 were produced by the time production ended in 1971.

1972, EMD announced an upgraded version, the GP38-2, which while externally very similar to it's predecessor, was a very different locomotive inside. The GP38-2's control system was electronic, and AC power produced by an alternator was rectified to supply the DC traction motors. By 1986, when production ended, 1800 had been built for US customers and a further 500 for Canada and Mexico. In the years since, many of the original GP38's have been upgraded to 'dash-2' specifications.

Even today, almost 50 years after their original introduction, many are still in use, mostly on short lines and in shunting operations, but occasionally in larger consists, shaking hands with their more modern counterparts. Like it's more powerful, six-axle cousin, the 3000hp SD40-2, the GP38-2 is a great example of American railroading in the diesel era.
