There was some discussion among the guys in the Midwest Central locomotive shop, wondering what do with a retired SW7 loco. Someone mentioned seeing a listing for a SW1500 that had been wrecked. A phone call confirmed the body was messed up pretty bad, but the engine was okay. The owner said we could have it for free if we would come get it.

Research confirmed that the 645CID engine in the SW1500 was about the same physical size as the 567CID engine in SW7. In fact, many of their parts are interchangeable. It took quite a while, and we had to enlist the aid of a couple of retired EMD employees, but we finally got it done: A 1500hp SW7.

Our sister road, Erie Northern, is also talking about doing one. Good luck, guys.

Locomotive Information:

The SW7, intoduced in 1949 by General Motors Electro Motive Division, followed the earlier SW1 and used the then-new 12-cylinder 567 cubic-inch engine and delivered 1200 horsepower. It was well received and 549 units were produced in 13 months, with a good number going to industry. Among the largest railroad users were Burlington, C&O, Illinois Central, Indiana Harbor Belt, Pennsylvania and Union Pacific, who together bought more than 200. Production ended in 1951 with the introduction of the SW9 and later units, which used upgraded 567 and then 645 cubic-inch engines. The last SW series locos were the MP15s, made from 1975 to 1984. Amazingly, even after more than 50 years, many SW series locos are still in use.

This loco is modified from the orignal Auran Artpack SW7 and was reskinned by majekear. Thanks to the following additional content creators: SW1500 engine spec and train effects libary by norfolksouthern37, enginesound by wulf_9, hornsound by nikos1 and bogeys by josheh. Thanks also to wulf_9 for the ARN library, which automatically assigns runnng numbers in the range 1101-1110.
