A basic B&O Vanderbuilt tender, correct for the T-3a class which did not use the USRA tender. B&O sought faster freight engines during World War II. Following the successful rebuilds of four 2-8-2's into the 70-inch drivered Q-4c and Q-4d classes, Mt. Clare Shops in Baltimore recycled the boilers of retired Mikes and Pacifics into 40 modern 4-8-2's between 1943 and 1948. Class T-3 (5555-5563), T-3a (5564), T-3b (5565-5584), and T-3c (5585-5594), plus a few engines received extra-long tenders and were re-classed T-3t. Only classes T-3 and T-3a used the Vanderbuilt tender.
