Version 2. Needing only a small engine for its modest passenger service inherited in the purchase of the Chicago Springfield & St Louis, rather than look for secondhand locomotives for this service, Chicago & Illinois Midland ordered a pair of rather modern 4-4-0's for delivery in June 1927. A third followed in August 1928. The A-1 class was numbered 500-502. Number 501 was scrapped in 1950 and the other two in 1953, one of them nearly preserved. The driving wheels bogey has been changed to that of the heavier 4-4-0 model to more closely model the wheel spacing of #10. A small Baldwin standard gauge 4-4-0, based on Red River & Gulf 104. Locomotives of this type were used by shortlines and logging railroads in the southeasern USA.
