Needing only a small engine for its modest passenger service inherited in the purchase of the Chicago Springfield & St Louis, rather than look for secondhand locomotives for this service, Chicago & Illinois Midland ordered a pair of rather modern 4-4-0's for delivery in June 1927, weighing only 118,000 pounds - heavy for a 4-4-0. A third followed in August 1928. The A-1 class was numbered 500-502. Number 501 was scrapped in 1950 and the other two in 1953, one of them nearly preserved. Tender for Baldwin Light and Medium 2-8-0s, 4-6-0s, and modern 4-4-0s.
