Version 2. Chicago & Illinois Midland ordered a pair of 2-10-2's (Class G-1, #600 and 601) in 1927 when the assumed operation of the former Chicago, Peoria & St. Louis north out of Springfield, IL to Peoria, IL. Heavier power was needed than their 51-inch drivered 2-8-2's for the coal trains running up out of the Sangamon River valley. Two copies (class G-2, #602, 603) sans boosters were ordered in 1929 and four more heavier versions (class H-1, #701-703) arrived in 1931. After operating 9 former Wabash 2-10-2's (class G-4, #651-659) during WWII, C&IM acquired nine former ACL engines in 1951, USRA heavy copies in class H-2 (#751-759). During the first World War, the United States government put the nation's railroads under the control of a government agency: the USRA (United States Railroad Administration). The lasting legacy of the USRA was a group of standard locomotive designs, which were used by railroads across the country. The locomotives were designed to use a minimum of materials to conserve vital materials for the war effort. To serve as many roles as possible, the USRA created a set of 12 standard steam loco designs.
The first to be delivered was Baltimore & Ohio 4500, a USRA light 2-8-2. This engine is currently on display at the B&O Railway Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The USRA engines came very late: even 4500 served for only a few months before the war ended; many USRA engines were not delivered until after the war.
94 of the light USRA 2-10-2s were allocated and delivered. Only 4 copies were built after USRA control ended (C&IM 600-603 would allegedly be them.). That makes the 2-10-2 the 2nd least copied USRA design (after the light Mallet with 0 copies). There were many reported teething problems and small nitpicks initially, but the light 2-10-2s did provide good service until the end of steam on the few roads that got them.
