Chesapeake & Ohio purchased 38 U25B's with the idea of using them in mountain coal train service to start replacing the huge Geep fleet and the perceived failure of the 19 SD18's purchased from EMD for that service in 1962. The U25B's developed mechanical problems due to the heavy nature of this service, generally underperforming the GP7's and 9's that had been successfully hauling coal over the Alleghenies for over ten years. Originally numbered 2500-2537, when merger with N&W was being considered in the late 1960's, they were renumbered 8100-8137. Most never wore another C&O paint scheme other than their delivery scheme, but a few did get the Doughnut scheme or Chessie colors.
