Tennessee Central purchased six ex-New York Central H-5 2-8-2's in 1937-38 and the last one in 1942. They were numbered 725-730 and were TC's only Mikes with 63-inch drivers. The 725-class lacked stokers. They had originally been built for NYC as G-5 2-8-0's in 1905-07 and were rebuilt into 2-8-2's in 1913-14. They were heavier than the 601-class Mikes and were restricted to the Eastern Division from Nashville, TN eastward to the CNO&TP (Southern) interchange. During the first World War, the United States government put the nation's railroads under the control of a government agency: the USRA (United States Railroad Administration). The lasting legacy of the USRA was a group of
standard locomotive designs, which were used by railroads across the country. The locomotives were designed to use a minimum of materials to conserve vital materials for the war effort. To serve as many roles as possible, the USRA created a set of 12 standard steam loco designs.
The first to be delivered was Baltimore & Ohio 4500, a light 2-8-2 and the first of 100 engines numbered 4500-4599. This engine is currently on display at the B&O Railway Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The USRA engines came very late: even 4500 served for only a few months before the war ended; many USRA engines were not delivered until after the war.
During the USRA era, the light 2-8-2 was the most common design with 625 delivered. Following the war, the design was copied by many railroads, including several that had not received any originals. Once these copies are factored in, there were 1266 light 2-8-2s. In those 1266 engines must be at least 40 skins that could be done. Well... get to it, then.
