Josh Harvey's RS1 painted in the ORIGINAL 1940's Alco-designed maroon and gray of the New York Susquehanna & Western. NYS&W owned 16 of these machines, #230-256, mostly even numbers only. Even numbers meant the loco had M.U. capability, with units 231 and 233 (odd numbers) the only non-M.U.-capable units. Some had steam generators and pulled commuter trains. Alas, the 539-engined Alco couldn't keep up, and as they broke down they were stored or scrapped.
The maroon and gray was simplified in the early 1950's to match the new Budd stainless steel passenger cars to silver with a maroon stripe for the lettering, then simplified again in 1955 to plain silver with black lettering.
