The C35 class steam locomotives were built by Eveleigh Railway Workshops in Sydney between 1914 and 1923 for the New South Wales Government Railways.
They suffered a long period of teething troubles and were poor performers, especially on long climbs.
Between December 1937 and 1943, the class was rebuilt with heavier frames, rebalanced driving wheels, Belpaire boilers and new cabs with more shelter.
The class took over hauling 'The Fish', from Sydney Terminal to Mount Victoria in June 1918 and 'The Caves Express' on the same route in 1932. To operate the latter service, 3506, 3526 and 3535 were painted in Caledonian Blue to match the carriages.
From 1925 until the 1940s, the C35s were gradually replaced by 36 class locomotives on Southern and Western services. By the end of the 1940s any of the class based at Southern and Western depots had been transferred to Eveleigh and Northern depots (Broadmeadow, Taree, Casino) to operate express and mail trains over the North Coast and Main North lines.
After full dieselisation of the North Coast line in 1958 and the electrification of the Short North to Gosford in 1960, the remaining C35s were based at Broadmeadow and confined to working both passenger and freight trains north of Gosford on the Short North and Broadmeadow to Armidale on the Main North.
Further dieselisation caused withdrawal of the class from service from the later 1950s to the mid 1960s. The last C35s in service were withdrawn in August 1968.

The model shows the C35 as rebuilt from 1937. The livery is black but covered in a layer of grey exhaust smut as was typical of the unwashed state during and beyond WW2.
