This is a representation of the 15Ft Interlocked Gates that controlled the railway crossing across Macauley Road at Kensington station on the VR suburban line to Broadmeadows. Probably installed in 1867, they didn't quite 'see' their 100th birthday, being replaced by Automatic Half Barriers (Boom Gates) in 1965. Although intended for that sole purpose, the gates can be used elsewhere, where a set of 15 Ft. interlocked gates (suitable for typical VR ''Double Track'') is needed for an ''at grade'' level crossing where the road meets the rail at a 16 degree, obtuse angle.
