Alco road switchers first joined the Nickel Plate roster in March 1954, when 23 1600 hp RS3's arrived.
Numbered 535-557 and originally assigned to the former Clover Leaf, these units were re-assigned to the Peoria Division later that year.
These units, along with the Baldwin AS16's, were the only NKP road switchers that operated long hood forward.
