Carriage maker August Fruehauf of Detroit began The Fruehauf Trailer Company in 1918 with a product he called the 'semi-trailer'. Fruehauf demonstrated that a truck can pull loads twice as heavy as what it can carry. The company grew to be one of the largest trailer manufacturers in the world.
