Norwegian State Railways acquired so powerful locomotives in the early 1900's, so that more empty carriages could be transported between Narvik and Riksgränsen than SJ steam litera Ma was able to make from Kiruna to Riksgränsen. Therefore, SJ decided to raise heavier ore trains, and also being able to eliminate the pushing from Abisko. The requirement was that the locomotive would be able to pull a 1600-ton train in pitch 10 ‰ and with a minimum speed of 10-12 km/h. Five 0-5-0 steam locos type R (SJ No. 974-978) were built in 1908-09 by Motala, respectively Nohab and became Sweden's strongest piston steam engines of all time. More locomotives were not purchased because the Iron ore line was electrified. Upon completion of electrification of the Iron Ore Line the 5 locomotives were transferred to the North Main Line, and two were sold in 1935 to Gävle - Dala Railway (974 and 975). The last service was 1961-62 when some locomotives were put into service with transportation of lime between Rättvik and Falun, among others R977. Shortly afterwards they were away. 977 and 978 were scrapped in 1976. R976 was submitted to the Railway Museum in Gävle and is still functioning.


Norska Statsbanorna anskaffade så starka lok i början av 1900 talet, så att fler tomvagnar kunde transporteras Narvik-Riksgränsen än vad SJ littera Ma förmådde framföra Kiruna-Riksgränsen. Därför beslöt SJ att anskaffa ett kraftigare malmtågslok, för att dessutom även kunna eliminera påskjutningen från Abisko av N lok. Kravet var att loket skulle orka dra ett 1600 ton tungt tåg i stigning 10 ‰ och med en hastighet på minst 10-12 km/t. Fem tiokopplade malmtågslok typ R (SJ nr 974-978) byggdes 1908-09 av Motala Verkstad resp. Nohab och blev därmed Sveriges starkaste kolvånglok genom alla tider. Fler lok anskaffades aldrig på grund av att malmbanan elektrifierades. Efter avslutad elektrifiering av Malmbanan överfördes loken till Norra Stambanan varav två såldes år 1935 till Gävle - Dala Järnväg (974 och 975). Sista tjänstgöring skedde 1961-62 då några lok åter sattes i trafik med kalktåg mellan Rättvik och Falun bl.a R977. Därefter ställdes de undan. 977 och 978 slopades 1973 och skrotades 1976. R976 överlämnades till Järnvägsmuseum och kan nu beses i Gävle, ibland under ånga.
