A stick-type oyster rack spline for placement in saltwater estuaries along the Eastern seaboard of Australia. The tarred sticks are populated by mature Sydney rock oysters.
Such racks were placed within the inter-tidal zone of estuaries, and so would be submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide.
Oyster farms consisted of parallel, straight oyster-rack rows of several hundred metres. Rows were separated by 6-10m to allow flat-bottomed punts to pass between them.
Farms were usually surrounded by a fence, the posts of which had a sign that declared the oyster farm's registration details. Such a fence can be provided by <kuid:368725:30117> 'oyster-farm mesh fence, timber posts, with endposts' and <kuid:368725:30118> 'oyster-farm mesh fence, timber posts, no endposts'.
