GEORGIAN DUBLIN - 16 St Stephens Green North (The Palace)

16 St. Stephen's Green North, Dublin, previously also known as The Palace, it being the residence of the Church of Ireland (Anglican) Archbishop of Dublin.

According to census documents collected by Police Constable Timothy Keeffe on the 9th May 1911, the house was then occupied by the

Most Reverend Joseph Ferguson Peacocke, DD; born Abbeyleix, Queen's County 1835; of Trinity College Dublin, B.A. 1857; M.A. 1863; B.D. 1877; D.D. 1883; a member of the Senate of Dublin University; Rector of St. George's, Dublin, 1873-1878; and of Monkstown 1878-94; Canon of St. Patrick's Cathedral 1875, and Rural Dean 1888; Professor of Pastoral Theology in Dublin University 1894, consecrated Lord Bishop of Meath in 1894 and elected Archbishop of Dublin and Bishop of Kildare and Glendalough in 1897. Died 1916.

His wife Caroline Sophia (82), youngest daughter of John Irvine of Rockfield and Killadeas, Co. Fermanagh, J.P. and D.L., Major Royal Tyrone Fusiliers, by Sarah his wife, eldest daughter of Thomas Towers of Bushy Park, Co. Tipperary; married at Trory, Co. Fermanagh in May 1865.

Their daughter Sarah Sophia Josephine (38), single, no profession stated.

All servants were Church of Ireland and single, except for Johnston the butler who was Presbyterian and married for 4 years with 3 children, 2 still living.

The house is now owned by ESBI, the electricity company, and is undergoing renovation in period style.
