Picea abies README
Picea abies, Eng. Norway Spruce, Finn. [metsä]kuusi is purely a European species. There are many
variations to the habit, solitary examples can become quite massive, but not generally over
30 metres tall. The Spruce is the dominant species in much of Finland, on drier soils
mixed forests with the Scots Pine are common, as well as the Spruce-Birch type of forest in
the more richer/moister habitats. 'Kuusi1' depicts the subspecies 'obovata' that gradually
replaces the typical spruce moving towards Russia and the North (Lapland). That subspecies is
optimized for shedding off heavy loads of snow with its slender branches and a slightly
oversized top.
