In 1914/15, the Gandducal Baden State Railways obtained 8 steam railcars to provide passenger services on little used lines. They were provided by Württembergische Maschinenfabrik in Esslingen, which had previously delivered similar railcars to the Royal Württemberg State railways, the Royal Prussian Railway Administration, the Prussian Military Railway at Zossen and other customers. Altogether 35 of these railcars were built between 1905 and 1915 to a design by the Württemberg locomotive superintendet Eugen Kittel. Body and engine had been based upon an earlier steam railcar with a Serpollet type boiler, which had proved unsatisfactory. The vertical smoketube boiler, designed by Kittel stood up well to the demands of steam operation. For the boiler design Kittel even recieved an award by the Society of German Railway Administrations in 1909. The Kittel railcar could be operated by a single person. Its max speed was 60 k/mh forwards and 50 km/h backwards. It could even pull up to three C2i-type light passenger cars.
After the merger in 1920, 25 of these railcars, including all Baden ones were taken over by Deutsche Reichsbahn. They continued to operate in the southwest of Germany. The single railcar owned by the military railways was sold to Switzerland. Some of the sturdy little engines even survived WWII. They were taken over by the newly founded Deutsche Bundesbahn. Based in Freiburg they continued to operate in southern Baden. The last of them were finally retired in 1954. Two ex-Baden and one ex-Württemberg raicar, which had been left in neighboring Alsace at the end of WW II and had been taken over by SNCF were still operational as late as 1955.
