The original Deer Island Lighthouse was a sparkplug-style lighthouse (A lighthouse shaped like a giant sparkplug, where the keeper lives in a round base). It was demolished in 1982 because it started to deteriorate due neglect and a narrow, faberglass lighthouse was placed on its original foundation. The white, fiberglass lighthouse received numerous complaints because it blended with the scenery and was pratically invisible, so it was moved to Great Pond Lighthouse (Also known as Nantucket Lighthouse) as a temporary replacement as the Great Pond Lighthouse was destroyed by a storm. A BROWN, fiberglass lighthouse imported from the U.K. was built in its place. In 2015-2016, the brown, fiberglass lighthouse was dismantled and replaced by a modern steel-skeletal tower that sits atop an offshore platform 100ft from the original lighthouse foundation. At night, the light alternates (changes colors) between red and white every 10 seconds. (Alternating characteristics are usually saved for the most dangerous of locations) In foggy whether, the fog signal sounds one blast every 10 seconds, but like all other lighthouses in Boston, the fog signal only comes on if a nearby ship calls this lighthouse on the radio and requests a fog signal.
