The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a black-and-white spiral-striped, brick lighthouse with a unique brick base and a black lantern room, located on Lighthouse Rd, south of North Carolina Highway 12 in the town of Buxton, North Carolina, on the east coast of the United States near Diamond Shoals. It has two black stripes, one on the north side, the other on the south side and two white stripes, one on the west side and one on the east side. These stripes make one-and-a-half rotations as they spiral upwards towards the lantern room. The St. Augustine lighthouse in Florida is the only other lighthouse with this exact pattern, but it is rotated by 45 degrees. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America at over 12 stories in height. In 1999, the lighthouse was moved 1,600 ft inland to protect its foundation from erosion as the ocean was gradually creeping towards it. Experts say it may need to be moved again in the near future. The lighthouse used to have a glass First Order Fresnel lens, but in World War II, it was removed so the lighthouse could be used as a watch tower to look for German U-Boats. The lens went missing after that. For that reason, it is now equipped with a modern DCB-224 Aerobeacon, which is a double-sided airport-style reflector 24 inches in diameter. At night, it makes a full rotation every 15 seconds, giving a flash every seven-and-a-half seconds. This lighthouse marks a dangerous section of the Graveyard of the Atlantic in the Outer Banks of North Carolina where the north-moving Gulf Stream collides with the south-moving Labrador Current, creating powerful waves.
