The bark is dark grey and peels off in rectangular pieces. The leaves, held on short leaf stems, are bright green with large, darkish glands on the underside. The foliage is very dense and somewhat gloomy in appearance. The young shoots are covered in soft down. Ebony has separate male and female flowers, which are small and off-white.
