Unique in the NSWGR for being the first locos to use the AC/DC transmission method and being the first units built to metric specifications, the 47 class were manufactured by Goninan in partnership with Hitachi Ltd. The class leader emerged from the shops on July 27th 1972 and was officially commissioned on August 9th, 1972.

The 47 class branch line units were initially based at Bathurst, performing general service duties on the Western Division. The high adhesion bogie design, low profile nose, and a well heated and insulated cab design made the class popular with crews. Unfortunately, the 47s suffered from a myriad of reliability problems, ranging from overheating due the vented cooling system through to traction motor failures.

In 1981 the entire class was moved to Broadmeadow where it was hoped lighter duties and their close proximity to the Cardiff Workshops would ease reliability concerns. Once the class was relocated, they spent their remaining days in use on the Coal Road and working various shunting trips through Port Waratah.

Withdrawals commenced in 1990 with the last run of the class (4706 + 4705) being on December 29th, 1990. However the 47 class has made a welcome return to tracks of NSW, with private operator Lachlan Valley Rail Freight (LVRF) purchasing 4701, 4702, 4703, 4707, 4708 and 4716. Class leader 4701 and 4716 are back in regular service on contract runs and several other members are currently being returned to operational status.
