The 20th Century Limited was the brainchild of George H. Daniels, the general passenger agent for the New York Central from 1889 until 1907. The train name instantly evoked excitement about the turn of the century. The train was billed as travelling the 960 miles in just 20 hours, for an average speed of 80 miles per hour. The famous red carpet that was laid near the entrance to the train at Grand Central Terminal lead to the now famous phrase 'red carpet treatment.' On its 36th anniversary, June 15, 1938, the Twentieth Century Limited inaugurated new train sets billed to be the 'First all-room train in America.' The trains operated as the first regularly scheduled 16-hour run between New York and Chicago. The Hudson (4-6-4) locomotive was streamlined so that its front resembled a bullet. Steam was gradually replaced with diesel power about 1945. After World War II on September 15, 1948 yet another reincarnation of the Twentieth Century Limited took place. These two new train sets featured many amenities for travelers including telephones, fluorescent lighting, pneumatic doors, foam rubber mattresses and enclosed toilets in all two-person rooms. On April 28th 1958 the New York Central added second-class services or coaches. The train ceased operation December 2, 1967.
