A chemicl tank car. Industry enabled.
The Borden Company, home of “Elsie the Cow ®”, built many creameries throughout upstate NY and New England and was an innovator in milk rail transportation. Perhaps its most distinctive creation was the “Butter Dish” milk tank car which began service during the Art Deco days of the 30’s. With its unique sloped streamlined design, the resemblance to a butter dish was obvious and hence the colorful nickname. They had a total of 40 of these cars. These tank cars consisted of 2 3000 gal. tanks for a total of 6000 gal. that the milk was dumped into from the 20 gal. milk cans collected along the route. Later cars were transferred to the chemical division and used to haul 'Elmer's Glue' and related products, into the early 1970's.
