Prototypical operation:
Horizon cars in this paint scheme would be seen on short-distance Amtrak trains in the Midwest and California from 1989 until around 2000, though they can appear anywhere in Amtrak's network, and some remained in the Phase III scheme well past 2000. They typically appear in trains of 3 - 5 cars in length, and frequently the train will have at least one Amfleet I or Horizon food service car.


History:
In the late 1980s, Amtrak, ever in need of more equipment, went shopping for new equipment for use on their short-distance trains. This need was fulfilled by Bombardier Corp, who had acquired many of the Pullman-Standard and Budd patents when they left the railcar manufacturing business. The new cars, dubbed the Horizon fleet, were based on the Pullman-Standard Comet commuter coaches dating from 1970. A tried and proven design, this allowed Bombardier to fulfill Amtrak's order for 104 cars quickly and cheaper than designing a new car, with the noticeable differences on the Horizons being their upgraded interior, closing steps, and GSI Roller Bearing trucks.

Entering service in 1989, the Horizon cars have proven to be the Amtrak short-distance car of choice even to this day, allowing the existing Amfleet cars to migrate back toward the East. Horizon cars can be seen on some Eastern trains and California, but primarily reside in Midwest service where they are the backbone of the short-distance trains out of Chicago.
