The 4-SUB was a very popular family, with orgins dating from 1925 from LSWR builds. These were orginally known as 3-SUB's.
The phrase of SUB mean SURburban which where many units spent most of their lives, in the London Suburbs, working along-side
the EPB's which followed in 1951 with many radical changes, including Electro-Pnuematic Braking, hencing their name! The family of
the all-steel SUB's were orginally from their preicessors of SUB's, which where called 'Sheba's (

body                                    "in all-steel. and with a flatter, front end. Many things did remain in the steel versions like the door window arrangement, which"
can                                     "still be found on many of his coaches that he designed, and the underframe. The design was so successful, that many of the"
ideas                                   "were incorpirated into the all-steel HAL's, except they had 1 compartment less in the DM's. So the first batch were delivered"
in                                      "SR matchine green with 'sunshine' lettering (a shaded sans-serif style.). By this time, the 'Big Four' (LMS, SR, LNER and GWR)"
starting                                "with a BR green repaint. Then going onto yellow patches, then full yellow ends, then BR blue, then onto their final livery,"
br                                      "Blue and grey by which time, the Class 508's were starting service, and replaced some of the fleet of SUB's, which were"
needed                                  "for the SR's tradition of recyling certain components. More on this later. But mean while, the SUB's were involed in many"
things                                  "Including being a basis for the EPB design. They were also reformed, for example, '4-LAV' 2932 had its motor coaches"
replaced                                "by '4-SUB' 4377 for many years. Wooden roofed/Steel SUB traillers were also used in some units, including 2926, which"
unlike                                  "2932, had a different problem. Which included replacement of the DM's with HAL DM's and a wooden roofed trailler to replce the"
tckl,                                   "thus meaning there were no lavitory facitities in 2926 at all! Further more, the unit retained its 5 first class compartment trailler, while"
others                                  "had 3 of them were declassified! Steel traillers also found their ways into 3-SUB's to make them into 4-SUB's. And 2 additional units"
were                                    "made up in 1969 using spare traillers and HAL DM's, one of them was 4131. And 4378 was reformed into a 2-SUB and converted into"
a                                       "stores unit in 1973 and it was renumbered to 024. Several of the SUB's in their later life, after withdrawl from passanger service were also"
converted                               "into de-icers. That wasn't the only conversion to take place. Others followed, including replacement of the stencil headcode with"
roller                                  "blind headcodes, carreid out on some units. some did suffer some accidental damage, which included a mishap at Horsham when a"
double-up                               "went wrong. The force was that great that it smashed one of the fleets DM's compartment by the TS! The number is what I"
cannot                                  "remember. The fleet were all withdrawn in 1982 as they were needed to be scrapped and the motors removed to be put into the"
brand                                   "new at the time Class 510's, which were latter changed to 455/7, 455/8 and 455/9. The new units had nothing in common with the"
sub's,                                  "since they are based on the 'short MK3' body shell and sliding doors, the motors were also resigned to one of the TSO, making it"
to                                      "become a MSO. However, 1 SUB still exists thanks to British Railways/Network SouthEast/Surburban Electric Railway Assoication, which is"
restoring                               "the once preserved SUB to its fomer days since it had some 5 years in open storage. Still painted in the yellow ends,"
sr                                      "matchline green and Sunshine lettering."
