With A.E. Goodwin delivering large numbers of dual-cab main line Alco locos to the NSWGR, Clyde Engineering was forced to counter this move and release a dual-cab EMD loco. although                                "these locomotives were super-reliable early in their careers, their crews rightly regarded them as extremely rough riders due to the bogie pins being placed 'off-centre'. This factor provided added overhang and resultant pitch and roll, something that wasn't satisfactorily overcome with improved spring rates and dampers which kept breaking away from the bogies. As a result, fitters simply discarded the dampers altogether."
initally                                "used over the Main Southern line, the entire class was transferred to Bathurst in 1970 to work the Indian Pacific express and freight trains over the newly-comissioned East-West standard gauge railway. However, their pitch and roll when teamed with the then lighter nature of the track between Parkes and Broken Hill, quickly saw them returned to the Main Southern line and replaced with the aforementioned dual-cab Alcos which tended to ride much better due in part to their heavily equalised and conventionally centered bogies."

All were withdrawn during December 1986 and January 1987, some just having received full overhauls. after laying in store at Junee (with one unit, no. 42107, returned to limited service in 1989), they were offered for disposal. While scrappers managed to acquire three of the class, the Northern Rivers Railway (now QR National/Interail) purchased the better four locos, Nos. 42103, 42105, 42107 and 42109, for a planned tourist train over the Murwillumbah to Casino line. The balance, Nos. 42101, 42102 and 42106 were snapped up by preservationists and commercial interests, unit 42106 being purchased by NRR/Interail, but it is only a shell."
