Nathan was one of many companies which comercially made whistles for railroads that needed them. Their standard 5 chime was a common sight of the age of steam, and was copied by various railways around the world. A modified Nathan 5 chime was the standard whistle design used notably by the Victorian Railways of Australia and Japanese National Railways.
