Victorian Railways Series III Y Class Diesel Electric Locomotive enginespec.
Their controls were specially designed for shunting, the loco brake was of a self 'lapping' type which made for instantaneous brake action, perfect for shunting and the throttle was so wired that the loco moved the instant the throttle was moved away from idle, again, perfect for shunting. about 4 Y's were always kept on the standard gauge for work in the Dynon yards but the rest of the fleet were flung to every corner of the system. For many years they were the power on Spencer St. to Werribee peak hour passenger services, they where often used on goods trains between Spencer St Goods Yard and North Geelong Yard at night and would average out 1,000ton.
Y 175 was unique to the class as it was geared to operate at 60 mph - all others could only operate at 40 mph. The higher speed enabled it to haul the Victorian Railways Commissioner's Train around the state. In this role it replaced 4-6-0 steam loco D3 658/639.
notes: The Westinghouse brake system is set up to the 26L, A7 and A7EL air pressures specs and isn't suitable to run with other locomotives until all e-specs have been updated to suit 1980+ 'V/Line' era physics, the tag max-tractive-effort will also need to be added to the loco config and set to '162025.622472'.
