Victorian Railways B Class Diesel Electric Locomotive enginespec.
The B Class Locomotive was the first Diesel Electric Main Line Locomotive to enter service for the Victorian Railways in 1952, The Victorian Government wanted a Locomotive that didn't have to be serviced at every stop or turn at for the next journey, they wanted all axles powered so the B Class was Born . Although they where powerful at the time compared to the C Class 2-8-0 Heavy Goods Main Line Locomotive and S Class 4-6-2 Passenger Locomotive they lacked acceleration and top end power, most of the drivers where in favour of the S Class Pacific for passenger trains. Because the VR Government wanted Dieselisation to succeed the S Class Pacific where all scrapped by 1954 and the B's took over all Main Line Passenger including the Spirit of Progress, due to there heavy axle load of 18tons 12cwt they where restrcited to Main Line only as most of the branch lines where still a mixture of 60lb/y and 75lb/y rails.
B 67 was the first to be withdrawn and scrapped after running 3,242,314 miles.
