Victorian Railways G Class Diesel Electric Locomotive enginespec.

By the mid 1980's V/Line realised that it was time to start replacing their first generation mainline diesels with modern high power locomotives, Their introduction (along with the N class) saw the withdrawl of most B and S class. About this time most remaining branches were being upgraded to allow the use of these heavier locos. The G's were quite similar mechanically to the C class except for two important differences. They were equipped with the standard dash 2, modular electrical system and they were fitted with Super Series wheelslip control. They were the first mainline diesels delivered without automatic staff exchangers. There are differences within the class, the first 5 had the bigger AR 16 generator compared to the rest of the class that recieved the smaller AR 11.

The first 5 G's were actually an extension of AN's order for BL's and were built at Clyde's Rosewater, South Australia plant. G's 516 - 525 were also built at Rosewater. G 526 - 543 were built at Clyde's Somerton, Victoria plant, they are capable of pulling 1500 tonnes on a 1in50 and 4500 tonnes on level to 1in100 grade, the motors are setup in 4 transitions, Parallel, Parallel with fields shunted 34%, Parallel with fields shunted 46% and Parallel with fields shunted 74% which helps it maintain high tractive effort at all speeds, These locomotives field shunt within the motors and not in the electircal contact cabnet, so it's a smooth transition rather then the jolts other locomotives do when they field shunt within the electrical cabnet.

G 517 and 518 where the first to be scrapped after being totalled in a crash just shortly after Freight Victoria took over V/Line.
